2005 Peter Pompili Handicap Tournament

On Saturday 15 January 11 members took part in the annual handicap competition organised and run by Paul McLeod. It was good to see the younger players doing well with Paul Vas Nunes defeating Peter Spencer in the final and Dominic Maloney beating Martin Griffiths in the closely fought Plate.

2004 Christmas Meal

26 club members and their friends converged on the Artichoke in Brentwood for what was a thoroughly enjoyable social event. Proceedings started, as usual, in the bar but it wasn't long before it was to the tables for an excellent three course meal. Many familiar faces were mixed in with new. The raffle was a success with nine first rate prizes being distributed, albeit less than evenly. Thanks to Paul for ensuring the evening was well organised and successful.

Ladder afternoon (February 2004)

8 members attended our ladder afternoon on 28th February. 2 hours later and with everyone completely worn out having each played between 2 and 4 matches, the biggest winner was Fabrice Berjot (the French Raider).

Fabrice lulled us all into a false sense of security by losing a couple of matches to players in the middle of the ladder early in the afternoon then wound himself up and stormed a fantastic win against Peter Spencer to jump into 6th place by the end. Paul Vas Nunes also moved up a respectable 5 spots with a good win against Simon Skeels to take up 14th position.

Ladder afternoon (August 2003)

Attendance was understandably lower during the Bank Holiday Weekend Ladder afternoon. There were eight of us prepared for some sweaty squash on what was another unusually hot afternoon.

With many of the top players absent, Jim, Paul, Ian and Phil - Jacques ended the afternoon undefeated. Others had more mixed results but not suprisingly Martin's regular Ladder challenges in the preceeding months has already (not to mention his admitted tactic of selecting weaker players for early games) given him a significant lead over his peers.

Peter Pompili Handicap Tournament

On February 22nd the third handicap tournament was held in memory of Peter Pompili. Peter, who sadly died three years ago, was one of our most active members since the clubs formation in 1996.

The sixteen people who entered the tournament completed in the main competition plus a plate event.

Phil Waring and Rob Furzer both had hard, close scoring matches on their way to the final. Phil had to overcome Colin (the Flying Scotsman) Atkins, Martin Griffiths and the soft touches of Ian Mann while Rob had equally difficult matches against Nick Pope, Tom Thumb Davey and the left handed wizardry of Gary Lee.

Phil ran out the winner of the main event.

In the plate event there were some very close matches with the Driver family, Gillian and Adam, narrowly losing to Colin Atkins and David Bell 15-14. The final was eventually fought out between Simon Skeels and David Bell with Simon being the victor.

Thank you all for turning up, especially the newly weds Lorianna and Tim, and

congratulations to all of the winners and remember there is always next time for the players who came second.

Closed Championships 2002

The draw this year comprised two mens and a ladies competition. The finals were held on Saturday 9 November at the Brentwood Centre. It was a shame that holidays and other commitments prevented Alan, Jacque and Rob B. from competing this year.

The Ladies final saw Sue Hanley and Anne Lindsey lock rackets for the mantle of champion. Although, Anne got off to a nervous start she soon found her composure and went on to win the match. There were two mens finals to play, the plate and the main event. In the plate Geza Harta and Colin Atkins battled in an excellent match with Geza maintaining his cool to win the covetted top spot.

In the main Mens final, defending champion Jim Hood, three times winner, was challenged by Piers everett. On paper this looked like being a close contest and so it was to be. Piers pushed hard for every point in every game but Jim was able to draw on reserves to up the ante. This proved too much for Piers, who in the fifth game pulled up with a muscle injury, leaving Jim to take the crown once more.

Ladder afternoon

This periods ladder afternoon (September/October) enjoyed record attendance with 16 players all eager to enjoy that extra bit of frisson associated with this competitve free for all.

The placings also enjoyed quite a shake up with significant advances over the period for some contrasting with tumbles by others. Colin Atkins, Gary Lee and Simon Skeels have all fared particularly well. Anyone who had not yet tried to climb up that greasy squash pole is recommended to give it ago as soon as possible ... but beware, it can get addictive (as Martin Griffiths and Alan Mason will confirm!).

Ladder afternoon

On Saturday 30th August we held our usual end of period ladder afternoon. The holiday impact did mean that numbers were somewhat suppressed but the competitive spirit raged as fiercely as ever. Peter Spencer came out on top with a clean sheet but with Martin Littler snapping at his heels to steal his crown.

Our next ladder afternoon will be towards the end of October. Look out for the details on our squash notice board in the Brentwood Centre and of course on your email.

Squashathon

Over the 24 hours commencing 5pm on Friday 19 July 2002 the Squash Club took part in the now well established Sportathon run by the Brentwood Centre. The event aims to raise money for the mayor's charities and the participating clubs. A creditable £200 was raised by the Club's members this year with half going to support disabled and special needs charities.

Special thanks must go to those who played through the early hours of the morning, particularly Ian McLeod, David Bell, Martin Griffiths and Robert Burton. However, all those taking part should be proud of their efforts as without them we would not have been able to play squash for 24 hours without a break. Thanks also to Ted Fenton's for sponsoring the club by providing a sports bag as a prize.

Real Tennis Outing

On 13th July, twelve Brentwood Squash Club members decamped for our (now) annual pilgramage to play tennis (both Real and Lawn) at Prested Hall.

The afternoon consisted of a short period of coaching on the rules of Real Tennis (the original indoor one with all the galleries and oddly shaped wooden raquet) followed by a knock out (handicap) competition running concurrently with a few sets on the fabulous astroturf lawn tennis courts at this picturesque club.

Ian McLoud repeated his fine performance of the previous year to win the championship. The afternoon was rounded off nicely with a delicious two course meal in the clubhouse. Any members who have not yet given this enjoyable afternoon a try is recommended to do so when it comes around again next summer.

Ladder Afternoon (June 2002)

Ladder Afternoon (June 2002)

On June 29th we enjoyed another successful ladder afternoon. 12 members attended and 24 matches were recorded with one or two upsets amongst them!

It was particularly good to see Paul McLeod back on the court and regaining some of the ladder ground that he has lost whilst he has been injured. Robert Furzer and Peter Spencer are also clearly going from strength to strength as they climb up the rungs of that slippery squash pole!

England Squash Club Charter

Promoting squash and making sure the sport is as accessible as possible has led to Brentwood Squash Club gaining recognition through a national award.

Brentwood Squash club is the first club within the county to gain the England Squash Club charter Bronze Award.

The Charter is designed to support the development of a network of clubs around the country that are accessible and welcoming and provide opportunities to develop coaches, volunteers and players.

The Award also means the club gained accreditation through the Unsquasable Junior Award scheme.

Development Club of the Year 2002 Bronze Category

Even though we put in a strong bid for the award we were unsuccessful this year.

The awards went to -

Gold - Hallamshire Tennis and Squash Club

Silver - Truro Squash Club

Bronze - Next Generation Club, Chorley

Super Series 8 Tournament

On Wednesday 19 June Paul, David, Andy, Ross, Martin and Rob were privileged to watch the World's top eight squash players meet in the last of the group matches of this now well established competition.

The first match kicked off at 5pm at the Broadgate Arena Venue in the City and the enjoyable evening of squash concluded at about 10pm. As always the athletisism of the players was outstanding and the speed and accuracy of shots under pressure was a sight to behold.

Of the four games played it was those between Lincou and Boswell and Palmer and White that were the most exciting to watch. The results were:

  1. Mark Chaloner bt Ong Beng Hee 15-4, 15-7, 15-8
  2. Thierry Lincou bt Stewart Boswell 15-14, 13-15, 15-3, 15-7
  3. David Palmer bt John White 15-5, 6-15, 15-10, 8-15, 15-9
  4. Peter Nicol bt Chris Walker 8-15, 15-6, 15-5, 15-12

Full details of the event can be found at Super Series Results.

Junior coaching

The dates and times for junior coaching have been announced and are at Junior Rota.

Social match with Harlow

On Saturday 9th March Paul McLeod organised a 12 a side home social match between Brentwood Squash Club and Harlow Squash Club. The night was a great success with some very close matches being played. Geza still can't get over his opponent calling Set 1 at two games all and 8 all. In great Geza style he kept his cool (no red mists in front of his eyes) and won 9 - 8. Everyone played their best - Ian against one of the up and coming youngsters of the County, Steve was distracted, Jim had a tough one, Sue went close and Jaques was like a young Gazelle around court.

Ladder Matches:

On 23 February a further Ladder afternoon was held. 9 attended the two hour challenge afternoon. 14 matches were played. Chris Lindsey will be updating the ladder with Saturday's results and those recorded during the last couple of months shortly. For the current Ladder including points go to the Ladder or visit the Notice Board. As usual the member with the most points at the end of the Club year will win £50. Additionally, the top 10 players are automatically eligible for the Club's Essex League Squad.

Provisional (Club) Marking Course
On Wednesday 23 January seven Club members received a lecture on the application of the rules of squash from William Winter in the Sports Bar. Four stayed on to take the written exam. Should two players from the same Essex League squad pass the exam the team will receive bonus points at the end of the season.

The evening was very informative and provided a great opportunity for players to brush up on the rules of the game through discussion with other players and the experts.
Heritage Lottery Fund
Great News! The Club has had its application for a grant accepted for 2002. As a result the Club will be able to organise a number of activities to develop squash during the year and buy some equipment as well.

Furthermore, Junior coaching, which when last run was a great success, will also now be able to return as a regular activity soon. Look out for further details on upcoming activities under Forthcoming events or on the Club Notice Board.
Peter Pompili Handicap
On Saturday 19 January, Paul ran the now annual handicap competition open to all Club members. While the event was a success it was disappointing to see that four of the 16 who entered did not turn up. Please let us know if you cannot make it to avoid disappointing others!

Anyway, the handicaps were about right with some really close games in the main event as well as in the Plate. Congratulations go to James Walton, our new younger member, on winning the plate and Hugh Sigrist for taking the main title this year. Bad luck to Sue Hanley and Peter Spencer, the respective defeated finalists.
Marking Workshop
Paul organised and ran an all day workshop on 28 December for eight members covering squash rules and refereeing which included lectures, videos, on court examples and a lunch. It is hoped that further events can be held later in the year.
Christmas meal
The Club's annual Christmas meal at the Headley Arms was as in previous years a success, although numbers were down on last time. The raffle was well supported, so thank you to all who contributed so generously. Well done, Sue for winning the top prize of the Kit Bag. Thank you to Ted Fenton's sports shop, the Brentwood Centre and Dewson's for providing raffle prizes.

Ladder Matches:

The last Ladder afternoon of 2001 was held on Saturday 15 December. 14 attended the two hour challenge afternoon. Well over 25 matches were played and some interesting encounters resulted. Martin's consistent performance sees him moving his points total of 82 well ahead of his nearest opponent, Hugh Sigrist, who was unable to attend. Ian remains on top spot on the Ladder but he is likely to be challenged during the Christmas break by Martin in second place and Robert in third among others. For the full Ladder including points go to the Ladder or visit the Notice Board. As usual the member with the most points at the end of the Club year will win £50. Additionally, the top 10 players are automatically eligible for the Club's Essex League Squad.

Closed Finals:

On Saturday 31 March 2001 the Club held its Closed Championship Finals.

The absence of the junior event made the evening a somewhat quieter affair than last year and in all there were three matches played.

Della Richmond, with no opponent to play, won the Ladies Competition with a walk over. Fortunately, Colin Atkins was on hand to give her and the assembled audience a tough match that ended with Colin winning 3-1.

The Men's B Final saw Robert Furzer beating Geza Harta 3-0 in match that saw Robert making very few mistakes, while Geza on the other hand rarely looked settled.

The Men's A Final saw Jim Hood, the current Champion, retaining his title in a match with Peter Spencer. The final score was 3-0 to Jim.

Trophies were presented by Paul McLeod and photographs from the evening will be put up on the Notice Board shortly.

Essex League 2000/1 winter season

The Winter season had mixed results for the Club. Pre-Christmas saw the team promoted having won 7 out of 10 matches. The second half of the season presented Brentwood with much stronger opposition and unfortunately the team ended up holding up the pile at the bottom of the League.

However, all who played had an enjoyable season of social squash. Welcome to Alan Mason, Neil Surman and Rob Grant who all played in the team for the first time this year.

The squad is 10 strong and the selection is automatically drawn from the first 10 players available on the Club's Ladder.
